Spring / Summer 2022 at Y Drive
It’s been a year since I drove home my new MK2 Polo Breadvan some 200 miles. The world still seemed in an uncertain state of flux and another year on I’m not sure much has changed in that regard!
When I think about cars I’ve bought over the years there’s a mix of initial gut reaction when picking them up - some have put a smile on my face straight away and for others the enjoyment grew over time. Ironically some of those that I’ve instantly been delighted with turned out to be more work than I’d bargained for. It’s fair to say the Polo is not one of these cars. I’ve grown to enjoy it more over time, it hasn’t given me any major problems and it is definitely a keeper.
It’s not that I didn’t initially find the car met my expectations in terms of its overall condition and charm, but it did take some getting used to. It didn’t give the instant gratification of something like my old Smart Roadster with its distinctive turbo-wastegate whoosh! But that turned out to be a lot harder work than the Polo to say the least. To be fair to the roadster, I did try and use what is really a fun car for the summer for an all year-round daily commute... remember them? The Polo is much more versatile in comparison!
I’m rambling a bit because truth be told there’s not much to put in this update. Over the Winter and Spring I’ve been using the Polo lightly and fixed some running issues (as I’ve already covered here). I have a list of a few things that will need replacing over time, though it’s mostly running and driving spot on.
Life is likely to get a bit busier over the course of this year so I might not be able to write as many posts. As a reminder you can always check out my twitter feed to see what I’m up to. There are a few summer shows I’ve arranged to attend and I’ll post some photos of them on there at the very least.
I have some more household DIY to do that will take up some free time. Even so in the long term I’ve a hankering to get another project underway. But for now I don’t think I’ve really got the time, money or space to run another car concurrently with the Polo... so something else perhaps?
Whatever it is I’ve come to accept that learning about, assembling and fixing mechanical stuff has become a bit of a (mostly!) harmless addiction so any avenue for that, especially if it involves a bit of creativity and problem solving, would be great. If I figure out what to work on I’ll let you know, but any suggestions are also welcome!
In the meantime I’ll try to continue with the occasional update here on any car-related news of mine or anything that is going on in the world of interesting old cars. I like writing about what I’m up to and I know there are at least one or two of you out there that enjoy reading what I write too!
Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great summer.
